Sense and Sensibility at the Wells Theater

February 1, 2020

Our members and friends once again gathered at the historic Wells Theater in Downtown Norfolk to enjoy a stage adaptation of one of Jane Austen's works.  This time, we were on hand for Sense and Sensibility, and we were not disappointed.  The evening began with a "Sensibili-TEA Party" hosted in the theater's Tazewell Lounge by the Southern Virginia Tea Company.  It was a perfect way for all of us to gather and have a chance to socialize prior to the beginning of the show.  We were soon encouraged to find our seats--we had secured both box and mezzanine seats so that our members might have advantageous views--and were given a most enjoyable performance.  Cast members not only took on the roles of the various characters in the novel but also managed to be sheep, horses, and even a hill at one point!  After the curtain call, the theater had arranged to have us join the cast on stage for a picture and to offer our congratulations for a job well done.  Thanks to the Virginia Stage Company for such an enjoyable evening!  Be sure to check out our Facebook page for photos!

Sanditon Premiere Party

January 9, 2020

The Hampton Roads PBS affiliate, WHRO, hosted a Jane Austen extravaganza event to help launch their new series, Sanditon, which was inspired by Jane Austen's unfinished novel of the same name.  The Regency Society of Virginia had an information table there so that other Janeites in attendance might learn more about us and join in the fun we have!  The Southeastern Chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America was also on hand to inspire others who love Austen's work and its president, Amy Stallings, gave a fantastic talk prior to the showing of first episode to give everyone background on the incomplete novel and the authoress herself.  In addition to getting a sneak peek at the series, attendees were able to try early 19th century dancing, enjoy light refreshments, and play a variety of Austen-inspired games (including "Cards Against Austen," which was the cause of much hilarity!).  We were so pleased with the turnout of RSV members to the event.  Thank you to those who interrupted their workweek to get a daily dose of Austen.  If you didn't make it, you can find pictures on our Facebook page!

Twelfth Night Dinner

January 4, 2020

Despite its best efforts, the heavy rains could not dissuade our guests from attending our seventh celebration of Twelfth Night, hosted at the historic Hanover Tavern.  We began the evening with a social hour, giving the party a chance to assemble, mingle, and play period games prior to seating ourselves for dinner.  Once again, we enjoyed superb service and excellent food from the Hanover Tavern staff and kitchens, and concluded our hearty meal with a delicious Queen's Cake (accompanied with either apricot or strawberry sauce), made courtesy of RSV member, Kimberly Costa.  We also added a few new "traditions" to our event this year with a drawing for door prizes, thanks to the generosity of RSV member, Michael Callahan, and finished off the evening by taking turns around the room sharing one positive thing that happened to each of us at the turn of the new year.  What a pleasure to see familiar faces as well as several new ones!  Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped to launch the 2020 RSV year in a most entertaining and successful manner!  Couldn't make it?  Be sure to check out our pictures on Facebook!  (You don't have to have a Facebook account to be able to view them.)
