"Freedom's Friendship: Monroe and Lafayette" Norfolk Historical Society lecture

Learn about the relationship between President James Monroe and the Marquis de Lafayette in a one-hour presentation given by Mark Walsh of the James Monroe Memorial Foundation. This will be given at the MacArthur Memorial Auditorium. The lecture is hosted by the Norfolk Historical Society and is free and open to the public. Period attire is welcome.

The Tidewater Winds Brass Quintet will perform in the garden of Portsmouth‘s Hill House Museum at 1 PM, playing pieces composed for Lafayette‘s Farewell Tour. Three museum interpreters, “The Men of the House,” will add a theatrical touch, describing the Hill family’s connections to General Lafayette’s visit. The museum will be open from 12-3 PM. Tickets are $5 cash per person.

Come celebrate the Bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette’s arrival in Norfolk on October 22, 1824, when we set sail on a sunset harbor cruise onboard the schooner American Rover. Watch fireworks bonfires along the Portsmouth waterfront. This ticketed event will include heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and a nautical perspective of the two cities. It is limited to 100 guests. Period attire is welcome! Tickets are $55/person.

In partnership with the Fort Nelson Chapter of the Portsmouth DAR, the Hill House Museum will host a tea featuring Mark Schneider, a nationally acclaimed General Marquis de Lafayette interpreter. He will discuss Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of 1824/1825, highlighting events in Portsmouth. Museum interpreters will describe the Hill family’s connections to Lafayette’s visit. The menu will include traditional tea sandwiches, French pastry desserts, and Five Sisters Tea, a signature blend sold exclusively by the museum. Ticket prices are $35 for museum members and $45 for non-members.

When Lafayette departed Norfolk in October 1824, the citizens of Norfolk held a grand ball in his honor, marking a significant moment in our city‘s history. Now, two centuries later, Norfolk will host a ball at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club (overlooking the Lafayette River), allowing us to relive this historic event.

Come dance to period music in your best 1820s period attire (modern Black Tie optional), and meet the Marquis (portrayed by Mark Schneider)!

Seating will be limited to 180 guests.

Details on ticket sales and the dinner menu will be promulgated in the Summer.
