While reading the "assigned" section is, of course, encouraged to enhance the discussion, if you don't have an opportunity to complete the reading, you are still most welcome to listen in.

This session will feature:  American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic by Victoria Johnson.

Discussion Schedule

  • September 14: Prologue - Chapter 5
  • September 28: Chapters 6-12
  • October 12: Chapters 13-Epilogue

Discover the world of botanist and physician David Hosack, whose name is best known as the doctor in attendance at the infamous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, but who perhaps should be remembered for his achievement in creating the first botanical garden in the new United States.
